World Book Day Detectives solve Murder Mystery

This year we celebrated World Book Day with a Cluedo-style murder mystery in school. Our Librarian, Miss Hibbert, set the scene with a video during tutor time telling students about an attempted murder near the library. There were some clues left behind – a set of 10 well-known books all with their villains missing from the pages – which one could be the murderer?

Our student detectives were set the task of tracking down the criminal using a special detective card. On Thursday, World Book Day, they had to visit 10 rooms marked with caution tape, work out which fictional character had left their alibi behind from an anonymous extract reading, and find and identify the possible ‘weapons’ relating to one of the novels. By process of elimination they were left with one room, one weapon and one suspect.

Could it be a villain from the pages of Harry Potter or Frankenstein? Or perhaps a rogue character from Alice in Wonderland or Romeo and Juliet? Or could it be the baddies from The Hunger Games or James and the Giant Peach? Around 200 students took part during lunchtime to find out who dunn’it to Mrs Dunn. We can confirm that the villainous culprit was: The Woman in Black with the White Witch's Wand (Narnia) in Mrs Dunn's office!

Well done to Oliver T, Zach F and Nate C who managed to solve the mystery in the quickest time and won a set of vouchers. They are planning to celebrate their victory by using their vouchers for a trip to Pizza Express!

We also had a WBD themed quiz on Friday lunchtime, where around 60 students and staff came together in teams to battle it out to see who the bookie-quizmasters of Chapel High were. Well done to Miss Vicker's team (1st), Mr Turner's team (2nd) and Miss Yates' team (3rd) who all won a combination of Easter Eggs, WBD badges and books.

Thank you to Miss Hibbert, our school librarian, for organising these brilliant book activities. She said:

What a fun week to celebrate our school library and our consistent message that reading is an integral part of our school's philosophy.”
