Year 9s learn about the science of scents

A group of Year 9 girls have been working hard to design, create and market their own perfumes as part of our STEM programme of activities. The special science session started off with information about famous female scientists and their work. Students then went on to learn about the different types of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) careers available and how they could get into this type of work when they leave school.

After learning about the science behind make-up and perfume, the students were set the task of designing their own scent, creating the packaging and producing an advertisement to sell their product. We invited local engineering consultant, Rachel Hodges, to judge the competition and she was very impressed by the girls’ ideas and creativity. There were some fantastic product designs and marketing campaigns. Congratulations to the winning team with their product, ‘Tropical Sunset’, which was made of sustainable materials and had a great bright design.
