Salters’ Festival of Chemistry

Our Science Department took a group of Year 10s to the University of Nottingham to take part in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. The students had a brilliant day full of chemistry activities, including an experiment where they made aspirin and then tested it. They had the opportunity to meet PhD students from the University and learnt all about their work with MOFs (metal organic frameworks) which they are hoping to use for carbon capture and to remove antibiotics from waste water. The group also participated in a Question and Answer session careers panel where they asked some excellent questions.

The Salters’ Institute is the flagship charity of the Salter’s Company which offers innovative programmes to encourage engagement with chemistry from a young age. It aims to connect learners and teachers to opportunities that transform their perception of chemistry - what it can do, how it shapes our lives and the different careers paths on offer. Well done to this great group of young chemists for their hard work and enthusiasm on this special trip.
