Celebrating National Poetry Day

Our school came alive with the rhythm and resonance of poetry as we celebrated National Poetry Day through a series of inspiring assemblies. Staff and students alike took to the stage to share poems that moved them - whether personally written or simply cherished.

In English lessons, creativity flourished as students explored the power of language, crafting poems that were bold, beautiful, and thought-provoking. One standout piece came from Carys H in Year 11, whose work captured the spirit of the day with remarkable depth and originality, an extract from her poem can be read below.

We’re proud of every student who embraced the challenge and joy of poetry. Their voices remind us that words have the power to connect, heal, and inspire.

Finding play.

Play wakes up early, excited and loud,
It runs through the school like it’s part of the crowd.
It hides in our pens, jumps in our school shoes,
It says, “You can learn, have fun when you choose.”
Play is a rebel with glitter and glue,
It sticks onto your thoughts and it follows you too.
It loves to laugh loud in your school book, it spins on the chair,
It whispers “be silly, pretend not to care.”
So teachers, please play, and students play too,
There’s mystical magic in doing what you love to do.
In stories, in sport, in building each day,
Remember the best way to grow is through play.
