Year 7s create courtroom trial for The Tempest

Our year 7s have been studying The Tempest in their English lessons and trying to decide whether Prospero, the play’s central character, was a good parent and role model. Mrs Brosnan’s group took part in some very enthusiastic debates about this and decided to set up a courtroom scene in their classroom before summoning Prospero to trial. Each student chose a character to research as homework and they produced some brilliant costumes and props to make the courtroom come to life. They even created some evidence for the trial using photos they found from performances at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

At the trial, each character argued their case to the panel of judges before they reached a final verdict. The group struggled to agree, with many students coming to different conclusions, but the judges finally decided that Prospero is a kind but overprotective parent to Miranda. However, they also agreed that he is a cruel and unsympathetic parental figure to Ariel and Caliban.

Mrs Brosnan, English teacher, said:

“I was so impressed with the passionate arguments and hilarious commitment to character. They really went above and beyond!”

Well done year 7s on such fabulous work.
